ASUU Warns FG: Fulfill Commitments by March or Risk Nationwide Strike

- ASUU Suspends Strike Plans: The union has put its proposed nationwide strike on hold following new promises from the federal government to address their demands.
- Key Demands Await Action: ASUU is demanding the release of revitalization funds, unpaid earned academic allowances, and withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries.
- March Deadline Set: The union has given the government until the end of March to fulfill its commitments before deciding on the next course of action.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained the decision to suspend its proposed nationwide strike despite months of warnings over the federal government’s failure to meet their demands.
According to ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union’s decision is based on fresh promises made by the government to address their concerns within a set timeframe.

In an exclusive interview with the Journalists, Osodeke confirmed that while the government has yet to take concrete action, it has pledged to resolve key issues, including the release of revitalization funds, payment of earned academic allowances, and the withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries.
“Our demands remain the same: the revitalization funds, unpaid earned academic allowances, withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries, and the renegotiation of our previous agreement,” Osodeke said.

ASUU Strike
He explained that during their last meeting, the government assured the union that these concerns would be addressed in the 2025 national budget and that the necessary funds would be released once the budget is implemented.
“Now that the budget has been passed and signed, there is no excuse for the government not to fulfill its promises. We are giving them until the end of this month (March) to act before we decide on our next steps,” he stated.
While ASUU remains cautious due to past unfulfilled commitments, Osodeke acknowledged that the government’s inclusion of their demands in the 2025 budget and the involvement of the Accountant-General’s office provide some grounds to delay industrial action.
