A group of heavily armed gunmen ambushed and killed two police officers on Sunday night along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road, around the Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victims were part of a police team returning from an official assignment when the attackers, who had hidden in the surrounding bush, suddenly opened fire on their patrol vehicle.

The sudden gunfire triggered widespread panic across the neighboring communities. A video clip later surfaced online showing the lifeless bodies of the two officers lying in a pool of blood next to their operational van.
An eyewitness, who works as a local tricycle rider, recounted hearing the rapid gunshots while traveling back from Ezira in the Orumba South axis.
He abandoned his vehicle to hide for safety, only to discover the dead officers lying on the road once the shooting had stopped.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the tragic incident on Monday, June 1, 2026, stating that the command has been working on the case since Sunday night to track down the perpetrators.
Orutugu announced plans to visit the scene to assess security vulnerabilities and develop better preventative strategies.
The CP also urged the public and motorists to remain highly vigilant and completely avoid approaching any checkpoints that lack official police vehicles or clearly identifiable personnel.
