The President was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
According to the President, despite their political rivalry for over 2 decades, Chief George has remained a respected leader who consistently offers valuable counsel on national issues.
Tinubu said:
“He made a vow on national television that he would go into exile if I became President of Nigeria. I pleaded with him to have a child’s heart because we would all remain in Nigeria and work together to achieve the peaceful and prosperous nation of our collective dreams.
“Since I became President, Chief George has been very gracious, offering advice and suggestions where necessary. I find many of his interventions very valuable and enriching.”
He added that political differences have never diminished his admiration for the former Military Governor of Ondo State who has dedicated his life to national service.
Chief George, in his remarks, said turning 80 had taught him that nations are built through unity, not hatred or division.
“At 80, I have learned that no nation is built by anger or division. Nations are built by hope, love, and a collective will to rise above selfish hatred,” he said.
He urged leaders to place national interest above personal ambition and called on Nigerians, especially young people, not to give up on the country.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also spoke at the event, recounting how Chief George played a crucial role in his political journey.
Makinde narrated how the then Minister of Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, used his influence in 2014 to block his access to the Eleyele Parade Ground for his governorship declaration. According to him, Chief George intervened, leading to the restoration of the approval on the eve of the event.
“I made the public declaration, and that was the beginning of the journey that has brought me here today as Governor of Oyo State,” Makinde said while thanking the celebrant for his support.
Chief George’s 80th birthday attracted political leaders, military veterans, and prominent Nigerians who highlighted his decades-long influence on national politics.
