He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maraban Jos had earlier received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. reporting that a woman was being attacked by a mob over allegations of child theft, though no evidence was provided to support the claim.
The DPO and a team of officers reportedly intervened and rescued the woman from the mob, taking her to the police station for protection and investigation.
However, tensions escalated later when a large crowd, numbering in the hundreds, stormed the police station.
According to the police, the mob overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her and set her body ablaze.
The Command confirmed that the victim was a native of Maraban Jos.

The police described the incident as criminal and unacceptable, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.
Mansir Hassan said several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the attack, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved.
He added that a full investigation has commenced, with assurances that all those found culpable will be prosecuted.
The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned the incident and warned against acts of jungle justice, mob violence and attacks on police formations.
Residents were urged to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities and allow law enforcement agencies to carry out proper investigations and prosecution in line with the law.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining public order across the state.
