While a move for Wesley Fofana remains a possibility, it’s thought that Thomas Tuchel’s side could see the move combined with a deal to take Christian Pulisic to Old Trafford.
Maguire is on the verge of losing his place in the team under Erik ten Hag, which could tempt him with a move to London as he looks towards the World Cup later this year.
The report adds United’s initial attempts to sign United States captain Pulisic led to the counter-interest in the 29-year-old.
However, Leicester’s Wesley Fofana is said to remain their main target, with a move for Maguire a back-up option as the window nears an end.
The report comes after Ten Hag hinted his captain could be dropped for the visit of Liverpool after defeats against Brighton and Brentford, which have left his side bottom of the table.
Ten Hag had said when asked if Maguire was his first-choice central defender in the summer: “Is Maguire a first-choice? I think he is.
“He’s proved it in the past but he also has to prove it in the present time and in the future. He has played how many times? Sixty times for England? He is a career that is really impressive and I expect a lot from him.
“But there is also internal competition and that is what a club like Man United needs.”
With Tuchel saying of his players linked with exits, including Pulisic, this week: “I know there is a lot of talk. We will not comment on our players.
