Former Labour Party vice presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has criticised his former principal, Peter Obi, over his decision to leave a political party during a period of internal crisis.
Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he addressed what he described as a major challenge surrounding Obi’s political approach. He faulted Obi’s exit from the Labour Party, insisting that he would have remained within the party to resolve its internal issues.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he also challenged Obi to reconsider his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 presidential election if he is not prepared to confront challenges directly.
He said, “As much as I dislike what the All Progressives Congress has done against Nigerians, someone who got the Labour Party’s ticket so easily should have stayed to fix the problem of the party, no matter how difficult it is.
“My former leader (Peter Obi) saying that wherever there is a quarrel, he will walk away? So there is a quarrel in Nigeria, will he walk away? If you are not ready to fight, stay in your house.”
Baba-Ahmed also raised concerns about Obi’s chances of securing strong support from Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that it is unlikely the region would unite behind him.
He clarified that his views were personal, while maintaining that he still holds respect for key political figures. He added that he had earlier advised Obi to begin building alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
According to him, on January 31, 2024, he urged Obi to engage northern political figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai as part of early preparations for 2027.

He stressed that long-term planning remains crucial in politics, warning that failure to prepare years ahead raises concerns about readiness. He added that his continued involvement would depend on the presence of a clear political strategy.
