The legendary entertainer was one of the most influential figures in country music, building a career that spanned more than six decades and produced some of the genre’s most enduring songs.
Parton was widely celebrated for hits including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” The latter became a global hit again after Whitney Houston recorded her acclaimed version for the 1992 film The Bodyguard.
Born in rural Tennessee in 1946, Parton grew up in a large family and rose from humble beginnings to become an internationally recognised performer. Her songwriting ability, distinctive voice and charismatic personality helped her transcend country music and establish a broad global audience.
Beyond music, Parton enjoyed a successful career as an actress, appearing in films including 9 to 5, the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias. She also became a major businesswoman through ventures including Dollywood, the theme park in Tennessee that bears her name.
Her achievements in music included 11 Grammy Awards and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. She also received numerous other honours throughout her career and was recognised for her contributions to American culture.

Her death comes months after she continued working on several projects despite health challenges. Her official website had announced new career projects as recently as August 19, 2026.
Parton also suffered the loss of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who died in 2025. She had continued to honour his memory while remaining active in music and other creative projects.
News of her death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fellow entertainers, musicians and fans around the world. Longtime friend and 9 to 5 co-star Lily Tomlin was among those to publicly mourn the country music legend.
