Edo University Uzairue in Crisis as Suspended VC, Registrar Refuse to Step Down

Staff members at Edo State University Uzairue have voiced concerns over an ongoing administrative crisis involving the suspended Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, and Registrar, Mr. Habib Ekhalefo. Allegations of corruption, authoritarian behavior, and disregard for due process have sparked significant unrest within the university community.

In a letter addressed to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the staff members stated how the suspended officials allegedly ignored their suspension by the university’s Governing Council.

The suspension followed accusations of financial misconduct, including contract splitting, mismanagement of funds, and a lack of adherence to institutional guidelines. These actions led to their suspension on November 4, 2024.

The letter, which was also sent to the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Chairman of the Education Committee in the Edo State House of Assembly, claims that despite clear directives to step down, the suspended Acting Vice Chancellor and Registrar have continued to hold meetings and make decisions, further inflaming tensions within the institution.

The petition alleges that their defiance has created a climate of fear, with reports of intimidation and threats against staff who complied with the Council’s orders. Some employees have reportedly faced unlawful disciplinary actions, including queries and threats to withhold their salaries. Additionally, a “Kangaroo Disciplinary Committee” has been set up to target staff members who followed the Council’s instructions.

Concerns were also raised regarding disruptions to the university’s promotion process, with claims that the suspended officials have blocked approved promotions to prevent staff members who do not support their leadership from advancing.

The staff members further allege that nearly 100 appointments have been made by the Acting Vice Chancellor without following due process, and that efforts are underway to confirm these appointments hastily.

In their letter, the staff called for urgent intervention from Governor Okpebholo to enforce the suspension orders and restore stability at the university. They warned that if the issues are not addressed promptly, the institution risks losing valuable academic staff who are already leaving.

While expressing confidence in the governor’s ability to address these pressing concerns, the staff members appealed for decisive action to ensure that Edo State University Uzairue continues its development as a world-class educational institution.
