The Federal Government has commenced plans to train about 11,700 teachers in Federal Unity Colleges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) following the signing of an agreement for the nationwide rollout of an AI Teacher Capacity Development Programme.

According to the ministry, the programme will be implemented in partnership with ICEDT Consult Limited and is expected to improve the learning experience of thousands of students through the responsible application of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Director of the Education Support Services Department, Gabriel Amudipe, described the initiative as a strategic investment in teacher development and the future of education in Nigeria.

He said the nationwide rollout followed the success of a pilot programme and aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to accelerate digital transformation in the education sector under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Amudipe commended ICEDT Consult Limited for adopting a zonal implementation strategy, noting that it would improve coordination, monitoring and quality assurance during the nationwide exercise.

He also directed ministry officials overseeing the programme to ensure strict compliance with implementation guidelines and maintain the quality standards achieved during the pilot phase.

The director reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting teacher professionalism, improving learning outcomes and encouraging the responsible use of emerging technologies in education.

Earlier, the Deputy Director of the Education Support Services Department, Oladele Fapohunda, described the programme as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening teachers’ capacity and advancing digital innovation across Federal Unity Colleges.

He stressed the importance of effective collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative nationwide.

Also speaking, the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Learning Scientist at ICEDT Consult Limited, Abdulrahman Orosanya, said the national rollout followed a successful pilot conducted in six Federal Unity Colleges, with one school selected from each geopolitical zone.

According to him, the pilot demonstrated that artificial intelligence could significantly improve lesson planning, classroom instruction, assessment and teachers’ productivity, leading to the ministry’s approval for nationwide expansion.

He added that the programme would strengthen teachers’ digital skills and support the Federal Government’s vision of building a technology-driven education system capable of preparing learners for the demands of the 21st century.
