The Federal Government has released ₦3.7 billion under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), marking a significant step in its push to improve staff welfare across Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the fund, driven by the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has now moved beyond policy pronouncements to actual implementation, with about 2,000 workers already benefiting from the first round of payments.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the disbursement has so far reached 43 tertiary institutions nationwide.
Breakdown of the first tranche shows that 17% of beneficiaries are academic staff, while 83% are non-academic workers. The gender ratio also reflects a wide gap 83% male and 17% female. The Ministry noted the imbalance and said it would work to encourage more female staff to apply in subsequent rounds.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the initiative is intended to reinforce government’s support for those who keep the country’s higher education system running.

“The TISSF is not just another monetary package. It is a clear demonstration of the government’s appreciation of the workforce that holds our tertiary institutions together. By ensuring these funds are released without delay, we are honouring our commitment to improve staff welfare, boost productivity and strengthen the future of our institutions,” he said.
The Ministry described the fund as yet another milestone in President Tinubu’s drive to shift Nigeria from a resource-dependent economy to a knowledge-driven one.
