EFCC Clears Senator Goje’s Daughter of Naira Abuse Allegations, Clarifies Video Misidentification

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed the allegations of naira abuse involving Fauziya Danjuma Goje, the daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje.

This follows widespread calls on social media for her prosecution after a video surfaced showing naira notes being sprayed at a wedding in Kano, which was believed to be hers.

In response, the EFCC issued a statement through its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, clarifying that while the video did indeed depict naira abuse, the event did not take place at Fauziya Goje’s wedding.

The commission’s investigation revealed that the wedding in question was actually that of Amina Babagana Zannah, the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, known as Hafsat Gold, the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise with branches in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.

The EFCC’s statement read: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been drawn to a viral video showing the nation’s currency, the naira, being freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024. Allegations of naira abuse were wrongly attributed to Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Goje, by Nigerians across various platforms, including a respected national newspaper editorial.”

The statement further clarified that the incident occurred during the wedding reception of Amina Babagana Zannah, not at Goje’s daughter’s event. “Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna (also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria), the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with offices in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai,” the EFCC said.

Hajara Haruna confirmed the video’s authenticity and acknowledged that it was filmed at her daughter’s wedding dinner. The EFCC also revealed that the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, hails from Niger Republic, and those who allegedly sprayed naira notes and dollar bills were members of the groom’s family from Niger.

The EFCC has invited the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, along with others involved in the currency abuse, to its national headquarters in Abuja for further questioning. Oyewale added, “While the EFCC appreciates the awareness its campaigns against naira abuse have generated, it will not act against anyone wrongly accused of a crime. The commission remains committed to its fight against naira abuse and will hold all offenders accountable, regardless of their status.”
