Elon Musk is spearheading a group of investors in a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in a move that could significantly alter the landscape of artificial intelligence.
Musk, who has had a long-standing feud with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has previously filed legal complaints against the company, accusing it of abandoning its original philanthropic mission in pursuit of profit.

He argues that OpenAI, originally founded as a non-profit, has deviated from its charter by commercializing its AI innovations.
OpenAI operates under a nonprofit umbrella that oversees OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that has driven the company’s meteoric rise in valuation to nearly $100 billion.
Altman is widely credited with masterminding this transformation, positioning OpenAI as a dominant force in AI development.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Musk’s bid, which, if successful, could grant him a controlling stake in OpenAI, placing it in direct competition with his own AI venture, xAI.
“If Sam Altman and the present OpenAI, Inc. Board of Directors are intent on becoming a fully for-profit corporation, it is vital that the charity be fairly compensated for what its leadership is taking away from it: control over the most transformative technology of our time,” said Marc Toberoff, an attorney representing the investors, in a statement. “It’s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was. We will make sure that happens.”

In response, Altman said in a post on X, “no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has since left over a dispute related to the company’s shift to for-profit work.
