The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticised the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, labelling it a gross abuse of Nigeria’s judicial system and a political witch-hunt. In a statement released on Friday by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group described the trial proceedings as riddled with deceit, media manipulation, and fabricated evidence.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Powerful said the government was desperately trying to link Kanu to the 2020 #EndSARS protests, citing Thursday’s Federal High Court session in Abuja as a key turning point. According to IPOB, the prosecution, having concluded its case, failed to present any credible evidence against Kanu. The defence has now filed a No-Case Submission, with the case adjourned to July 18, 2025.
He also slammed the testimony of the prosecution’s final witness—an alleged intelligence officer referred to as PW5-EEE—as inconsistent and evasive under cross-examination by Kanu’s lead counsel, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).
IPOB further accused the Federal Government of presenting forged and post-dated evidence, such as unsigned autopsy reports, to link the group to violence in the South-East. It described the attempt to pin 200 security officer deaths on IPOB as fabricated and lacking basis in law or fact.
The group also criticised Nigerian media for allegedly ignoring key revelations from the court, accusing them of biased reporting.

“Kanu is not on trial for violence but for speaking truth to power,” IPOB stated, calling on the international community to scrutinise court documents and judge the case independently.
