EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 32 year old defender confirmed his exit on 𝕏, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria. In a brief message, he described his time with the national team as the greatest privilege of his career and affirmed his continued support for the squad. Troost Ekong retires after earning 83 caps, scoring eight goals and winning three AFCON medals across a decade of committed service.
He made his senior debut in 2015 and quickly established himself as one of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders. His defining moment came at the 2023 AFCON, where he was named Player of the Tournament after leading the Super Eagles to a second place finish. His leadership, resilience and presence at the back became hallmarks of the national team over the years.
Troost Ekong’s departure comes at a challenging time for Nigeria. The team is already without young defender Benjamin Frederick, who will miss the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers due to injury. With two key defensive options now unavailable, head coach Eric Chelle faces a significant test in reorganising his backline before a major tournament.

The retirement of a captain and long serving defender signals the end of an era for the Super Eagles, raising new questions about depth, stability and experience as the squad looks ahead to Morocco 2025.
