The Enugu State Government has condemned the killing of Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, describing the act as “cowardly and cold-blooded.”
Eko Hot Blog reports that Eya was reportedly shot dead by gunmen along the Alumona–Eha Ndiagu Road in Nsukka Local Government Area on Friday, September 19, 2025.

In a statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the state government expressed sympathy to the late priest’s family, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, and the wider Catholic community.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, pledging to deploy technology and intelligence resources to track down those responsible.
To aid investigations, the Enugu State Government announced a ₦10 million reward for any credible information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

“The government will not spare any resources to defeat the remnants of criminal elements in the state,” the statement read.
