Former Minister of Works and Housing and ex-Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, will deliver the maiden convocation lecture of the Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED), Ijanikin, Lagos.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Fashola will present the lecture titled “Medical Education: Yesterday, Today and Nearest Future” on January 29, as part of activities marking the university’s maiden convocation ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Gbolahan Awosanya, disclosed this at a media briefing, where he announced that the university would graduate 27 medical doctors during the ceremony.
Awosanya also revealed that the institution would confer Fellowship honours on 3 distinguished individuals, including Fashola and the Lagos State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert.
Expressing gratitude for the milestone, the vice-chancellor said the university would have graduated its first set of students in 2025, but for delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that EkoUNIMED was intensifying efforts to advance medical research, particularly in the area of herbal medicine, stressing that countries such as China and India had successfully leveraged traditional medical knowledge to transform healthcare delivery.
Awosanya disclosed that the university had received positive evaluation reports from the National Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and would soon commence nursing programmes. He added that plans were also underway to introduce BSc programmes in Radiography and Medical Laboratory Sciences.
The vice-chancellor further stated that the institution had significantly reduced the cost of medical education, describing EkoUNIMED as the most affordable private medical university offering Medicine and Surgery in Nigeria.
He added that the university was planning to construct a teaching hospital in Ijanikin to improve healthcare services in the host community and provide a practical training base for students.
