The major road linking Umuenyere Alayi with Item communities in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State has collapsed following severe erosion, exposing villagers and travellers to danger.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the gully which residents said developed from a small erosion spot before suddenly worsening last week, has raised fears of accidents and cut off access for motorists.

Community members of Alayi, Item, and neighbouring areas, along with transporters, have appealed to the Abia State Government to urgently intervene by filling the gully and implementing erosion-control measures to prevent future occurrences.
In a temporary effort to prevent accidents, villagers placed green leaves around the collapsed section of the Alayi–Item road to serve as warning signs for approaching vehicles.

Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Uwabunkeonye Bassey, visited the site on Monday to sympathise with the affected communities. He assured residents that the state and local governments would act swiftly to address the situation.
Bassey further promised that a temporary access road would be created to ease movement until permanent reconstruction is carried out.
