- US Central Bank Prioritizes Independence Over Political Influence on Rates
The US Federal Reserve has decided to keep interest rates unchanged, maintaining them at 4.25-4.50 percent, despite strong urging from the White House, particularly from President Donald Trump. This decision was largely anticipated by financial experts, as the US economy continues to grapple with uncertainty caused by tariffs.
Eko Blog Blog reports that, the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee announced this move, stating its long-term goals are to achieve maximum employment and a 2 percent inflation rate. Currently, the economic outlook remains uncertain, and inflation is slightly higher at 2.7 percent.

This choice by the Fed, under the leadership of Chairman Jerome Powell, has not been unanimous. Two of the central bank’s governors, Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, both appointed by President Trump, disagreed with the decision. They believe the current money policies are too restrictive and favored a reduction in interest rates.
This marks a rare occasion, being the first time in over three decades that two members of the Fed’s Board of Governors have voted against an interest rate decision, highlighting the unusual public pressure from the White House.
President Trump has consistently pushed the Fed to lower rates, even resorting to personal criticisms of Chairman Powell. However, Powell has repeatedly affirmed the central bank’s independence from political influence in its monetary policy decisions.
This stand-off underscores the ongoing tension between the executive branch’s desire for specific economic outcomes and the central bank’s commitment to its independent mandate.
