A 35-year-old man was rescued on Sunday after a fire broke out at a petrol station in Igbeti town, Oyo State, causing panic in the area.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the incident happened at Bon-kay Petroleum Station along Kara Area, Kishi Road, while a tanker was offloading Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. The tanker, a Volvo truck carrying about 45,000 litres of fuel, suddenly caught fire during the discharge process.

According to eyewitnesses, sparks generated while transferring the fuel reportedly ignited the highly flammable product, leading to a massive blaze. Thick smoke quickly filled the sky as flames spread around the tanker and parts of the station. Residents, shop owners, and motorists nearby fled the scene in fear as the fire intensified.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident on Monday. He explained that firefighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call.
“On arrival, we met a Volvo truck with registration number KSB 300XB loaded with 45,000 litres of PMS engulfed in flames and heavy smoke,” Akinwande said.
Firefighters immediately began efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings and properties.
A man, believed to be about 35 years old, was rescued alive at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is reportedly responding well to medical care.
Although the tanker trailer and part of the petrol station were badly affected, the quick intervention of the fire service helped save properties worth millions of naira and prevented what could have turned into a major disaster.
Residents praised the swift action of emergency responders, noting that the situation could have been far worse considering the volatile nature of petroleum products.
Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage, while the fire service has advised petrol station operators to strictly follow safety procedures, especially during fuel discharge operations, to avoid similar incidents in the future.
