In response to the situation, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and other top government officials, embarked on an inspection tour of flood-affected communities along the Ibeju-Lekki axis of Epe Division.
During the visit, the delegation assessed the impact of the flooding in Awoyaya, Gbetu-Olorunkemi Road, Iwerekun, and other adjoining communities, while also inspecting drainage channels and waterways to identify both immediate and long-term solutions to the recurring challenge.
Beyond the Ibeju-Lekki corridor, communities within Epe Division also experienced varying degrees of flooding. In Ibonwon, Eredo LCDA, residents were affected by rising floodwaters following the heavy rainfall. Demonstrating prompt leadership, the Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, Hon. Ismail Monsuru Akinloye, swiftly mobilized emergency response efforts to assess the situation and provide immediate relief to affected residents while working to reduce the impact of the flooding.
While government intervention remains essential, flood control is a collective responsibility. Residents must avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels, desist from building on natural waterways, and actively participate in environmental sanitation exercises. Blocked drainage systems continue to be one of the major causes of flooding across many communities during the rainy season.
As climate change continues to increase the frequency and intensity of rainfall, governments at all levels must continue investing in modern drainage infrastructure, regular desilting of canals, and effective urban planning. Equally important is sustained public awareness on environmental responsibility and disaster preparedness.
The recent inspection by Governor Sanwo-Olu and the swift intervention by the Eredo LCDA administration demonstrate the importance of proactive leadership in disaster management. By combining responsive governance with active community participation, Epe Division can build stronger resilience against flooding and protect lives, property, and economic activities for generations to come.
