Aber was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2021 and stepped down from her post in January 2025 after President Donald Trump took office.
She had a distinguished career in law, graduating from the University of Richmond in 2003 and William & Mary Law School in 2006.
She served as a law clerk before joining the Eastern District of Virginia as an assistant U.S. attorney in 2009, working on high-profile cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, and child exploitation.
She was promoted to deputy chief of the criminal division in 2016 and later nominated by President Biden to serve as U.S. attorney in 2021, a nomination that was unanimously confirmed by the Senate.
During her tenure, she oversaw a staff of around 300.
Her successor, interim U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert, expressed deep sorrow over her passing, stating the office was “heartbroken beyond words” and called her “irreplaceable.” U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia praised Aber as an “exceptional public servant” who devoted her career to helping Virginians.
