The security crisis completely paralyzed economic and logistical activities around the bustling commercial zone.
Fearing an escalation of the hostilities, local market traders, street vendors, and transport workers operating within the popular Ojoo Motor Park, managed under the state’s Park Management System (PMS), forced their businesses shut as heavy tension gripped the neighborhood.
Local eyewitness accounts reveal that the entire breakdown of law and order stemmed from a micro-transaction dispute involving a commercial tricycle rider (locally known as a Maruwa rider) and a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator near the Strabag axis.
According to a community witness identified as Iya Kadijat, the tricycle operator had made a late-night cash withdrawal between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.
While the operator received the cash and utilized it immediately, a severe cellular network failure prevented the automated system from generating an instant transaction confirmation on the agent’s end.
Despite the rider offering his mobile device and ignition keys as a temporary guarantee of goodwill while the network sorted itself out, an unknown individual intervened in the argument, physically assaulting and stabbing the tricycle rider.
The rider was rushed to a nearby medical facility but succumbed to his deep wounds early Wednesday morning. News of his death rapidly spread, sparking immediate anger among his associates, relatives, and fellow operators, who quickly mobilized a massive retaliation against the opposing group.
Reports from local residents also indicated that the violence worsened when unidentified persons carrying sophisticated firearms appeared at the scene, with one individual opening fire into the crowds, resulting in additional fatalities and multiple bullet wounds.
Combined teams of security agencies were subsequently deployed to the hotspot to push back the rioters and restore calm.
Leading a high-powered state delegation to the area on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, strongly condemned the actions of the rioters, categorizing them as pure criminal elements.
Lawal explicitly warned against interpreting the conflict through an ethnic or tribal lens, asserting that criminality possesses no tribal identity.
He assured the remaining residents that the state’s longstanding reputation for peaceful coexistence, multi-ethnic stability, and rapid economic progress would not be compromised by isolated lawless acts, noting that security formations have been fully briefed to track down, arrest, and prosecute every individual connected to the killings.
