In a statement issued by Chooks Oko, Senior Legislative Aide to the Speaker and Head of Media, the summons is in line with the constitutional oversight responsibilities of the House, especially regarding the protection of public health and safety.
“The House of Representatives Committee on Environment has summoned the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Olajide Idris, to appear before it to clear allegations of release of gaseous substances into the atmosphere of Abuja,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the Committee, chaired by Hon. Michael Irom Etaba, directed the NCDC boss to provide a comprehensive explanation on the nature and origin of the emissions, actions taken so far, and the agency’s role in investigating and containing the situation.
The letter of invitation, dated June 19, also requested that Dr. Idris come with relevant officers, documents, reports, or technical materials that can aid the committee’s understanding of the issue.
The committee expects the NCDC to present preliminary findings on the health implications for affected residents and outline both immediate and long-term preventive measures.

This move signals a growing concern over environmental health hazards in the FCT and reinforces the legislature’s commitment to safeguarding public welfare through accountability and oversight.
