The family of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has revealed that he died from a snakebite while being held captive by bandits, contradicting earlier reports that linked his death to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
The clarification was made by the deceased officer’s son, Isyaka Abubakar, during an interview with DW, where he disclosed fresh details about the circumstances surrounding his father’s death.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to him, the retired military officer did not die from any pre-existing medical condition as previously reported.
The revelation comes days after reports emerged that the former senior army officer died while in the custody of bandits who abducted him and his wife along the Katsina-Matazu Road on May 30, 2026.
Isyaka also disclosed that his mother, who was kidnapped alongside the late general, remains in captivity despite reports in some quarters suggesting she had regained her freedom.
He expressed concern over her continued detention and appealed to relevant authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing her release.
The death of the retired military officer has continued to generate reactions across the country, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the worsening security situation and the increasing cases of kidnapping and banditry in parts of the country.
General Abubakar’s death while in captivity has also renewed calls for stronger measures to address insecurity and protect citizens from criminal attacks.
Following news of his death, President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences to the family and vowed that the Federal Government would not yield to the demands of criminal elements.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late officer as a distinguished military veteran who served the nation diligently before retiring from active service.
Tinubu noted that General Abubakar was travelling to his hometown when he and his wife were abducted by bandits.
The President extended his sympathies to the bereaved family, the Katsina State Government and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He also expressed concern over the continued captivity of the late general’s wife and prayed for her safe return.
