The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 26-year-old nursing student, Esther Onyinyechi Uzodinma, for attempting to swallow 76 wraps of cocaine before her flight to India. Esther, a 200-level student at Noida International University in Uttar Pradesh, India, was caught on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Royal Park Hotel, Sabon Gari, Kano, just hours before her scheduled flight on Qatar Airways from Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

Her plan was uncovered when NDLEA officers stopped Cosmas Okorie, a 31-year-old man, on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State on the same day. Cosmas was traveling in a commuter bus from Lagos to Kano with 76 pellets of cocaine hidden in an audio speaker.

The drugs weighed 1.34 kilograms and were meant to be delivered to Esther. Following this discovery, NDLEA operatives tracked and arrested Esther at her hotel in Kano.

During interrogation, Esther revealed that a drug cartel in India had recruited her and paid for her trip to Nigeria for the Christmas and New Year holidays. To keep her family unaware of her stay in Nigeria, she avoided her home state, Imo, and stayed at a hotel in Enugu for two weeks. She was then flown to Abuja and later Kano, where she planned to ingest the drugs before traveling. Esther was promised over $5,000 if she successfully delivered the drugs to India.

In other NDLEA operations:

Kogi State: Officers arrested four suspects on the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja highway with 38,000 pills of tramadol (225mg, 250mg, and 100mg) hidden in audio speakers and clothes.

Lagos State: On January 14, NDLEA raided a hideout in Ojodu-Berger and arrested 59-year-old Nwokedi Emeka Jonas. They recovered 10 parcels of Canadian Loud (4.9kg of synthetic cannabis) and branded paper bags for selling the drugs with labels like “Dead man” and “Gelato cake.”
On January 15, another raid in Igando New Town led to the arrest of three suspects: Isaac Vincent (32), Ebube Ikechi (25), and Christopher Usifoh (43). The officers seized 1,610kg of skunk, 6kg of tramadol, a delivery van, and three other vehicles.

On January 16, NDLEA confiscated 67kg of skunk from Saheed Sulaiman at his hideout on Edumare Street, Lagos Island.
Another operation in Lekki on January 18 led to the arrest of Olashile Okoya and Mohammed Ibrahim, with 28kg of Canadian Loud recovered from their home.

Kano State: On January 17, two suspects, Usama Adamu (25) and Isah Ibrahim (29), were arrested in Dawanau with 7.6kg of skunk, 78 tubes of rubber solution, and 356 bottles of ‘suck and die,’ a harmful psychoactive substance. Another suspect, Usman Isa (29), was caught with 49.8kg of skunk on Zaria Road.

Kwara State: On January 15, NDLEA arrested three suspects in Moro LGA with 65.5kg of cannabis and 390 tablets of Molly.

Taraba State: A suspect, Samuel Ogbu (24), was caught on Wukari-Zaki Ibiam road with 25,000 tramadol pills.

Abuja: NDLEA officers arrested Rufa’i Hashimu (27) in Gwarimpa village with 118 bottles of codeine syrup. In other parts of the city, 13 suspects were arrested, and drugs like tramadol, diazepam, and methamphetamine were seized.

The NDLEA continues to educate schools, religious groups, and communities across Nigeria about the dangers of drug abuse through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign. Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers and urged them to keep up their efforts to reduce drug supply and demand nationwide.
