‘Good Times’, ‘Coming To America’ Star, John Amos Dies At 84

Veteran Hollywood actor John Amos, best known for his roles in “Coming to America” and the 1970s sitcom “Good Times,” has passed away at the age of 84.

Amos died of natural causes on August 21, according to a statement from his son, Kelly Christopher Amos, shared on Tuesday.

In his tribute, Kelly expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing his father’s generous spirit and lasting impact on fans worldwide.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold and he was loved world over.

“Many fans consider him as their TV father. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor,” he announced.

Amos, a former football player at Colorado State University who had brief stints with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, later made a seamless transition to a successful entertainment career.

He first gained attention as Gordy Howard, the affable weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A New Jersey native, Amos earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the older Kunta Kinte in the landmark 1977 miniseries Roots. He also played a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on NBC’s The West Wing.

Amos’ film debut came in Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 classic Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. In 1988, he starred in Coming to America, playing the owner of a McDonald’s-style restaurant that employs Eddie Murphy’s character. Ironically, Amos had previously worked at McDonald’s and appeared in a 1970s commercial for the fast-food chain.
