The governor emphasized that maintaining a sustainable environment is vital for Lagos, especially as the state continues to experience rapid population growth and urban development.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, the governor highlighted tree planting as one of the most effective and simple ways to address climate change, enhance air quality, and foster a healthier environment for future generations.
He noted that the event was more than a birthday celebration; it was a reaffirmation of a shared commitment to protecting the environment and securing a sustainable future for Lagos State.
“As your governor, I remain committed to advancing initiatives that safeguard our environment and combat climate change from our urban greening programmes to renewable energy and climate adaptation projects,” he added.
Governor Sanwo-Olu further emphasized that every tree planted today plays a vital role in cooling the city, enhancing the air quality for residents, and reducing the risk of flooding across Lagos.
He stressed that each tree is a gift to the future , one that children and grandchildren will one day appreciate.

He praised the Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) for their leadership and commitment to meaningful initiatives. Comparing the trees to the seeds of leadership they are cultivating, he noted that these trees will grow strong, tall, and enduring, standing as living symbols of the Lagos of tomorrow.
The governor explained that LJLA represents a new generation of leaders who understand that true progress is not solely measured by economic development but also by sustainability and lasting impact.
Reflecting on the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, after whom the academy is named, Sanwo-Olu described him as a visionary and a man of service.
He said the tree planting exercise beautifully mirrors Jakande’s values of foresight, inclusiveness, and the courage to plant today what others will harvest in the future.
He also noted the significance of the initiative, saying it was a meaningful way for young leaders to honour his life while contributing to the future of Lagos State.
Underscoring the need for collective responsibility, the governor called on all Lagosians to join the movement to plant a tree, nurture it, and see it as a personal investment in the shared future of the state.
