The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has described Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as an intelligent, hardworking and capable leader with the capacity to govern the state, despite previously opposing his governorship ambition.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the monarch made the remarks on Thursday when Hamzat paid him a courtesy visit at his palace before proceeding to Iga-Egbe on Lagos Island, his maternal ancestral home.

Akiolu recalled that although he had once resisted Hamzat’s aspiration to become governor, he now recognises his leadership qualities and believes he possesses the competence required to lead the state.
The traditional ruler, however, advised the deputy governor to remain humble and inclusive if he eventually emerges as governor, urging him not to abandon those who have worked for his political party.
“Keep your head down when you become governor and do not neglect those who laboured for the party,” the monarch advised.
Responding, Hamzat described the visit as an opportunity to reconnect with his roots and reaffirm his commitment to cultural heritage and inclusive politics.
Meanwhile, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) Lawyers Group has endorsed the governorship ticket of Hamzat and Damilola Sonayon-James for the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

At an endorsement ceremony held under the auspices of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA), the National Convener of the group, Abibat Bankole-Apena, said the gathering represented a significant convergence of legal professionals united by a common belief in continuity, visionary leadership and good governance.
She noted that the endorsement was more than a political exercise, describing it as a collective vote of confidence in the proposed ticket.
Also speaking, Dr. Seun Akapo, who represented Sonayon-James, thanked members of the BAT Lawyers Group for their support, describing the event as a gathering of legal practitioners committed to justice, progress and effective governance.
