Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), has called on Northern political leaders to revive the values championed by the late General Hassan Usman-Katsina, especially unity, peace and self-sufficiency.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Babangida made the appeal at the second edition of the Hassan Usman-Katsina Memorial Conference organised by the New Vision Development Initiative (NEVDI) in Kaduna.

Represented by retired Colonel Lawal Gwadabe, the former leader said the late General’s principles were urgently needed as the region and the country confront rising economic hardship and insecurity.

He noted that Usman-Katsina, during his service as Chief of Army Staff, played a crucial role in preserving national cohesion and later dedicated his life to advocating for marginalised groups, especially children trapped in the Almajiri system.
Babangida said the late elder statesman believed firmly in unity, urging leaders to adopt his commitment to peacebuilding and national harmony.
Delivering a paper on Northern development, Professor Abubakar Mohammed stressed that Nigeria’s future depended heavily on the North’s ability to overcome poverty and low human-development indices.

He warned that without major improvements, the country’s growth and the 2030 SDGs would remain out of reach.
Also speaking, Professor Ango Abdullahi praised the late General’s integrity and advised present-day leaders to emulate his service-driven leadership.
Gwadabe, who chairs NEVDI’s Board of Trustees, encouraged the region to embrace innovation and purposeful leadership while announcing that the memorial conference would become a bi-annual event.
