- Residents and commuters applauded the government for prioritizing safety and cleanliness.
In a bold move to ensure orderliness and environmental sanity, the administration of Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, through its environmental team, on Friday embarked on a massive enforcement exercise against illegal trading along walkways and road setbacks in Bogije, Lakowe, and Ogunfayo.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the operation, spearheaded by the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi, was in response to rising encroachments on pedestrian and vehicular routes by traders who had turned public spaces into makeshift markets.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Ajumobi said:
“Trading activities are only allowed in designated markets.
Walkways and road setbacks are not trading spaces; they are meant to guarantee free movement of people and vehicles. This exercise is not to punish anyone but to restore order and protect lives.”
Residents of the affected areas expressed relief, noting that the illegal trading had become a menace. One commuter in Bogije, Mrs. Aderonke Hassan, said:
“For months, we have struggled with blocked walkways and heavy traffic because traders spread their goods on the road. This intervention is timely and commendable.”

Hon. Olowa, in his reaction, assured residents that his administration will continue to prioritize a clean and liveable environment.
“We cannot compromise on safety, orderliness, and environmental cleanliness. Our people deserve a community where roads are safe, walkways are free, and businesses thrive in designated markets,” he said.
The enforcement team successfully redirected traders back to approved markets and cleared the corridors, leaving the routes cleaner, safer, and less congested. Officials also warned that further violations would attract penalties.
