Tensions remain high in Nigeria’s aviation industry following the suspension of ValueJet pilots after an altercation with popular musician Wasiu Ayinde, known as KWAM1.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority took swift action by suspending Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, citing breaches of safety protocols during the August 5 incident at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
According to reports gathered, the trouble began when KWAM1 was seen carrying a flask on board. A flight attendant questioned its contents, suspecting alcohol, but KWAM1 claimed it contained medicine.
The disagreement escalated when KWAM1 allegedly poured some liquid on crew members and proceeded to block the plane’s movement by standing in front of it, preventing it from taxiing. This act directly violated safety regulations, prompting the NCAA’s disciplinary measures.
In response, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has vocally opposed the suspensions. NAAPE President Galadima Abednego highlighted the pilots’ clean records and faulted KWAM1’s conduct as the root cause of the incident. The union is calling for the pilots’ licenses to be reinstated and for a thorough but balanced investigation.
Conversely, several aviation safety experts have condemned NAAPE’s position. Retired pilot Mohammed Badamosi pointed out that pilots should never have initiated taxiing without clearance from ground controllers.
Olumide Ohunayo of the Aviation Safety Roundtable Initiative also criticized the pilots, labeling their decision reckless and contrary to established departure procedures designed to safeguard lives and equipment.
Meanwhile, NCAA’s Director General, Captain Chris Najomo, reiterated that the suspension remains in effect as investigations continue. He stressed the authority’s commitment to maintaining strict safety standards and the importance of due process in resolving the matter.
This incident has ignited wider conversations on professionalism and accountability within Nigeria’s aviation sector. The split opinions reflect the ongoing challenge of balancing enforcement of safety rules with understanding complex on-ground realities.
