Super-featherweight boxer John Cooney, 28, has tragically passed away following his defeat to Welshman Nathan Howells in Belfast last Saturday.
The Irish fighter suffered an intracranial haemorrhage during the bout at Ulster Hall and underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. Despite a week-long battle for survival, he succumbed to his injuries.

Cooney collapsed in the ring and was immediately attended to by medical staff before being stretchered out and transferred to Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
“It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away,” MHD Promotions said in a statement on behalf of his family.
His parents and fiancée, Emmaleen, expressed their gratitude to the hospital staff for their tireless efforts and to everyone who had sent messages of support and prayers.
“He was a much-loved son, brother, and partner, and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John ‘The Kid’ Cooney,” the statement added.

Cooney was competing in his first defence of the Celtic super-featherweight title, which he won with a stunning first-round victory over Liam Gaynor in November 2023 at Dublin’s 3Arena, on the undercard of Katie Taylor’s rematch against Chantelle Cameron.
After a year-long absence due to a hand injury, he made his comeback in October 2024, defeating Tampela Maharusi of Tanzania in London.
