FIFA has appointed American referee Ismail Elfath to officiate Wednesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup semi final between England and Argentina in Atlanta.
The world football governing body confirmed on Tuesday that Elfath will take charge of the high profile encounter scheduled for 8 p.m. on July 15 at Atlanta Stadium. He will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, while Italy’s Maurizio Mariani has been named fourth official. Daniele Bindoni will serve as reserve assistant referee.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Elfath’s appointment has attracted attention because of Lionel Messi’s record in matches involving the American official. Reports by Wales Online and NY Sports Day indicate that teams featuring the Argentina captain have won all five matches in which Elfath has officiated or served as an official.
The sequence includes four Inter Miami victories, the 2023 Leagues Cup final and the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, where Elfath served as fourth official as Argentina defeated France on penalties.
The semi final is one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament. England are seeking their first World Cup final appearance since winning the competition in 1966, while defending champions Argentina are aiming to reach a second consecutive final.
Argentina advanced to the last four after overcoming Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland in the knockout stages, while England defeated DR Congo, Mexico and Norway to secure their place in the semi final.
Meanwhile, security preparations have been intensified ahead of the match. According to reports, FIFA officials, local law enforcement agencies and federal authorities held security meetings this week because of concerns over the historic rivalry between supporters of both nations.
Fans of England and Argentina will enter the stadium through separate gates, while additional police personnel have been deployed around event venues, entertainment districts and other high traffic areas across Atlanta.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni urged supporters to focus on football rather than politics.

“The message to the Argentine people is that this is a soccer match. We’re going to face a great team with a great coach, but it is just a soccer match, nothing more than that,” Scaloni said.
The winners of Wednesday’s semi final will advance to Sunday’s World Cup final against either Spain or France, while the defeated side will compete in the third place play off.
