EKO HOT BLOG reports that Lamido made the remark amid increasing political realignments and growing calls from some stakeholders urging Jonathan to return to partisan politics ahead of the next general elections.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, the Peoples Democratic Party chieftain described the calls for Jonathan’s political return as misplaced and driven by desperation.
According to him, dragging the former president into the current political atmosphere could damage the reputation and dignity he has built as a respected elder statesman both in Nigeria and internationally.
“It is unfair and ill-opportune to drag his person into the current murky political arena populated by unserious, self-seeking and self-serving characters,” Lamido stated.
The former governor argued that Jonathan has moved beyond the stage of active political contests and should instead remain among globally respected former leaders.
He maintained that former presidents should preserve their status and avoid becoming entangled in divisive partisan struggles.
Lamido also criticised the current state of political parties in the country, alleging that many lack ideological direction and are primarily focused on gaining power ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, the renewed calls for Jonathan’s return are not based on any clear political ideology or national agenda.
“The call for President Jonathan to hop into the political arena, no matter how well-intentioned, stems from the helplessness and hopelessness Nigeria has found itself in,” he wrote.
The PDP stalwart described the pressure on Jonathan as a “desperation call,” reflecting public frustration over Nigeria’s political and economic situation.
He further urged the former president to resist what he called “ego-caressing” appeals from political supporters and groups seeking to benefit from his popularity and reputation.
“While the call is appreciated, it is a desperation call lacking in any depth beyond being a ventilator of frustration,” Lamido added.

He concluded that Jonathan remains an important national figure whose future role in the country should be approached carefully rather than hastily tied to the 2027 presidential contest.
