Operations at Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) have been brought to a halt after the Nigeria Labour Congress shut down its offices across Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger states.
Eko Hot Blog reports that as of Wednesday morning, AEDC facilities in these locations were under lock and key, following a protest by labour leaders over the mass dismissal of more than 900 workers.

The action comes just a day after NLC President, Joe Ajaero, led a picket at the company’s headquarters in Abuja, describing the layoffs as unfair and deceptive.
According to Ajaero, the crisis began about six months ago when AEDC management assured unions that only staff who had reached retirement age would be affected. However, he said the reality turned out differently.

“Many of those disengaged were nowhere near retirement. Some had only spent two to three years on the job. That is the height of deceit,” he said.
The union has now issued a 48-hour ultimatum to AEDC to address the situation or face more serious industrial action.
Ajaero warned that if the issue is not resolved, electricity supply across the Federal Capital Territory and the affected states could be severely disrupted.
“If workers stay away, the system will naturally be affected,” he added.

With tensions rising, residents and businesses are already bracing for possible power outages if the standoff is not quickly resolved.
