The gun, described as a “high-powered bolt-action rifle,” was discovered in a bushy area near the university, where Kirk had addressed a large crowd on Wednesday.
Speaking during a press briefing, Robert Bohls, head of the FBI’s Salt Lake City office, confirmed that investigators also recovered a palm print, forearm imprint, and a shoe mark believed to belong to the suspect.

Beau Mason, the state’s public safety commissioner, noted that video footage showed the gunman scaling a roof before firing. He described the suspect as likely being of university age and confirmed that the individual was male.
“We’re confident in our ability to track this person down,” Mason said, adding that facial recognition technology is being used to identify the suspect.
However, if that fails, the authorities plan to release his image to the public for help.
The suspect remains on the run as the investigation intensifies.
