The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen, has lost his elder brother, Alhaji Aminu Pate, who passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with illness in Zaria.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Alhaji Pate died at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, where he had been receiving treatment for several weeks. The outlet noted that his passing has drawn widespread condolences from political leaders, traditional institutions, and members of the Speaker’s constituency.

The death was formally announced by the Zazzau Emirate Council through its Media and Publicity Officer, Malam Abdullahi Kwarbai. According to the statement, Alhaji Pate held the traditional title of Wamban Dawakin Zazzau, a role that signified his importance within the Emirate and his long-standing contributions to the community.

Before his retirement, the late Pate served as a Director of Personnel Management, working across several local government councils in Kaduna State. Known for his commitment to fairness, discipline, and service delivery, he earned respect from both colleagues and younger professionals whom he mentored during his civil service career.
He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His funeral prayer took place at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Emir of Zazzau’s Palace in Zaria, in line with Islamic burial rites. The event was attended by top political figures, traditional leaders, family members, and associates who paid their final respects.
Speaker Abbas, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency, is said to be deeply saddened by the loss. Though he has not yet issued a public statement, sources close to the family confirm he is currently observing a private mourning period.
Alhaji Aminu Pate was widely regarded as a pillar of wisdom and stability within both his family and the Zazzau community. His legacy, particularly in public service and traditional leadership, will be remembered by many.
