The Kebbi State Government has expressed profound grief over a fatal boat accident in Yauri Local Government Area that claimed the lives of 14 people, mostly women, shortly after a wedding celebration.
Governor Nasir Idris, also known as Kauran Gwandu, extended condolences to the grieving families, the Yauri Emirate, and residents, describing the tragedy as a heartbreaking event that has cast the state into mourning, Eko Hot Blog reports.

The incident took place in Gumbi village, where the victims were part of a large group escorting a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village, Ngaski Local Government Area. On their return journey, the boat reportedly capsized mid-river.

Speaking at the funeral prayers through the Yauri Local Government Chairman, Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the affected families to remain strong and accept the incident as the will of Allah.
“I appeal to you to accept this incident in good faith, remembering that nothing occurs without the knowledge of our Creator,” Idris said. “God acts when He wills, and no one can question Him.”
Shu’aibu provided additional details, explaining that over 100 people were on the boat when it overturned, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals, including 13 women and a child.
The victims were buried according to Islamic rites, with prayers offered for the repose of their souls.

“We pray that Allah forgives their shortcomings and grants them Jannatul Firdaus, and that He gives the families and the Yauri community the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he said.
The tragedy underscores the persistent risks of water transport in riverine communities of Kebbi State, where boats remain a primary mode of travel for social and economic activities.
The state government reassured residents of its support as they mourn one of the deadliest boat accidents in recent years.
