The Lagos State Government has taken delivery of a new set of 24-car trains to boost operations on the Lagos Red Line and improve commuter experience along the corridor.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the additional rolling stock would increase capacity, reduce waiting time, and enhance overall service delivery as the state continues to invest in rail-based transportation.

“We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians. We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone,” the governor said.

The Red Line, inaugurated in February 2024, is a 37-kilometre rail corridor stretching from Agbado to Oyingbo. It passes through major districts such as Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, providing a key mass transit option across some of Lagos’ busiest routes.

Developed as part of the state’s rail master plan, the line shares a right of way with the Nigerian Railway Corporation standard gauge track and connects with the Lagos Blue Line at key interchange points, supporting an integrated transport system.

Since its launch, the corridor has seen growing patronage, driven by the need for faster and more reliable alternatives to road transport in the traffic-prone city.

The development is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to expand rail services and improve connectivity across the state. Authorities say plans are underway to extend the Red Line further and integrate it with bus rapid transit and water transport systems.
