The Lagos State Government has officially commenced the implementation of the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) for the 2026 Annual School Census, marking a significant shift from manual to digital data collection across all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the flag-off ceremony, held at Ikeja Junior Grammar School, Bolade-Oshodi, signals the beginning of a new era in education data management in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive mandating all states to adopt the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) for education data collection and management.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the initiative as a major milestone in strengthening education planning, governance, and service delivery in Lagos State.
“The Annual School Census remains one of the most critical exercises in the education sector because it provides the reliable data required for effective planning, policy formulation, budgeting, and equitable distribution of educational resources. The migration from a manual process to the Digital National Education Management Information System represents a significant step towards improving the quality, accuracy, credibility, and timeliness of education data in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole,” the Commissioner said.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda in education and assured stakeholders that the Ministry would provide the necessary technical support to ensure the successful implementation of the new system.
Alli-Balogun also urged school administrators, proprietors of private schools, principals, head teachers, and education officers to cooperate fully with census officials by providing accurate and timely information through the digital platform.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos State Coordinating Unit and Acting Statistician-General, Mr. Bashir Temitayo Oseni-Ope, said the introduction of DNEMIS would enhance data integrity and promote evidence-based decision-making across the education sector.
He noted that reliable education data remains essential for effective policy implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, adding that the success of the digital census depends on the active participation of every school in Lagos State.
The Annual School Census serves as Nigeria’s official source of education statistics, capturing vital information on student enrolment, teaching and non-teaching staff, school infrastructure, learning facilities, and other key indicators required for national and state education planning.
According to the Ministry, the deployment of the digital platform is expected to reduce errors associated with manual data collection, eliminate duplication, improve data validation and analysis, enhance transparency, and provide real-time information for strategic planning and improved service delivery.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to embracing innovation and digital solutions that will strengthen the education sector and improve learning outcomes for every child.
The Ministry also called on all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state to participate actively in the 2026 Annual School Census and comply fully with the Digital National Education Management Information System.
Other dignitaries at the event included the State Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee, Mr. Hakeem Bolaji; the General Secretary of the Conference of Private Schools Association in Lagos (COPSAIL), Pastor Odemona Solomon; directors in the education sector, principals, and other stakeholders.
