The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has announced the successful planting of 19,875 trees across Lagos over the past year, transforming urban landscapes and encouraging a culture of environmental responsibility.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this milestone was achieved through LASPARK’s flagship initiative, Trees For Lagos, designed to improve green infrastructure, enhance air quality, and support healthier living conditions in all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas of the state.

LASPARK General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, explained that the campaign goes beyond planting trees. “For us, tree planting is not just about the environment , it is about health, identity, and legacy. We want residents of Lagos to feel proud of their surroundings and motivated to contribute,” she said.
She highlighted that the campaign has grown into a citywide movement through strategic partnerships with private developers, schools, civil society groups, religious institutions, and individuals. Public spaces, roadsides, residential estates, schools, and commercial areas have all benefitted from the greening project.
In her words, “LASPARK’s work has also introduced tree planting into school events, promoted green building certifications, and integrated environmental education into community activities. This has inspired volunteerism and civic participation, with many Lagosians showing renewed pride and ownership of their environment.”

Beyond beautification, Popoola noted that the environmental impact is significant.
The trees are expected to help reduce air pollution, lower urban heat levels, improve flood management, and restore ecological balance across the city.
As of July 2025, with 19,875 trees successfully planted, LASPARK is now shifting focus to the next phase expanding green corridors, forming community-based maintenance teams, and embedding nature-focused education into schools.
Popoola reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to its long term goal of making Lagos a greener and more sustainable city. “This is just the beginning. Our mission is to cultivate a lasting culture of environmental awareness that will be passed on for generations,” she added.
