The only opposition member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Osafile Stella, has revealed that she has faced repeated taunts over her decision to defect from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) instead of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking with journalists after Monday’s plenary, Osafile admitted that the criticism has been persistent but said she remains unfazed, stressing that resilience is essential in politics.

“Of course, there are taunts, but in politics you must develop a thick skin. Without that, it is difficult to move forward,” she said.
Responding to questions about whether the ADC has assured her of a return ticket in the next election, the lawmaker maintained that her political decisions are guided by her constituents. She noted that the ADC is not a new platform and already has established party structures.
“The ADC is well established. The structures are there. My people encouraged me to take this step. It was the constituents I represent who asked me to move to the ADC,” she explained.
On religion and governance, Osafile emphasised that Nigeria operates a secular system, adding that political engagement transcends religious affiliation.
“Your personality will always reflect in how you play politics. After God’s authority comes government, so you cannot distance yourself from it,” she said.
Osafile, who chairs the House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, also dismissed claims that her status as the sole opposition lawmaker has led to discrimination within the Assembly. She commended Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa for maintaining professionalism and impartiality.
“When I campaigned, I emphasised capacity, competence and character. I believe the Speaker understands his role and assigns responsibilities appropriately. I have not experienced any form of discrimination,” she stated.
She added that beyond party affiliations, the Speaker remains committed to governance and upholding constitutional principles.
