The Lagos State Police Command has attributed the arrest of some residents during the July 25 monthly environmental sanitation exercise to a communication gap, following public concerns over the enforcement of the exercise.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the clarification comes after the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that there was no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

Residents had alleged that they were arrested and intimidated by police officers while moving around during the exercise.
Responding to the complaints, Wahab said any arrest based solely on movement during the sanitation exercise was unlawful and did not reflect the policy of the Lagos State Government.
“For clarity, there is no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise,” the commissioner said.
He explained that the exercise was reintroduced to promote environmental cleanliness across the state under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, noting that the law does not authorize restrictions on residents’ movement.
According to him, the government’s objective is to encourage Lagosians to embrace environmental sanitation as a civic responsibility rather than relying on enforcement measures.
Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin? Wait—speaking to The Guardian, the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident resulted from a communication lapse.
“There is a communication gap somewhere, and the Command is working with the government for clarity,” Adebisi said.
The development follows public confusion over the implementation of the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos State.
