- Lagos to host Africa’s first-ever E1 Grand Prix on Victoria Island waterways
- Event emphasises sustainability, innovation, and global recognition
- Millions worldwide expected to watch seven electric-boat races
The Lagos State Government has restated its ambition to position the city as a global hub of enterprise, resilience, and innovation as it gets set to host the maiden edition of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix (GP).
Eko Hot Blog reports that the international water sports competition is scheduled to take place from October 3 to 5, 2025, on Victoria Island’s scenic waterways.
During the E1 Lagos GP Immersion Session held at the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Boat Jetty in Falomo, Ikoyi, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, described Lagos as “a city of strength and innovation, one that constantly reinvents itself and continues to attract the world’s gaze.”

Omotoso stressed that the event is not merely about boat racing but a showcase of advanced planning, science, and sustainability.
“This is more than putting race boats on the water. Everything about it requires science, careful planning, and accuracy.
It shows that it is serious business for Lagos. It is about sustainability, creativity, and responsibility. Lagos is indeed the city of now and the city of the future,” he said.
The Commissioner called on residents to embrace environmental responsibility and keep the waterways clean for visitors and future generations.
“The environment is the only thing we can leave behind for the generations that are coming after us. We must not abuse it, and we must not mess it up,” he added.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Sam Egube, emphasized the global importance of the competition, saying Lagos is fast emerging as Africa’s hub for technology, culture, and business.
“The world is beginning to recognise Lagos for what it truly is,a resilient city with untapped potential.
Investors see this, and that is why Lagos remains at the forefront of conversations about Africa’s future,” Egube remarked.
General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, assured participants and fans that top-notch logistics and security measures are in place.
“We are prepared. This is a high-profile event, and every detail counts.
From security to logistics, everything is being done to ensure that Lagos delivers a world-class experience,” he said, noting that the Navy, Marine Police, and other security agencies are on full alert.
He revealed that competitors will have “shakedown sessions” ahead of the official races to familiarise themselves with the Lagos waterways.
Corporate sponsors, including First Bank of Nigeria and Tolaram Group, pledged their support, calling the event a “historic first for Africa” that aligns with Lagos’ vision of growth and global relevance.
The championship will feature seven electric-boat races, with winners earning 25 points, second place 15 points, and third place 10 points, ensuring fierce competition.
Beyond the thrills, the E1 Lagos GP is expected to highlight the potential of Lagos’ waterways as drivers of tourism, innovation, and economic renewal.
Millions of viewers worldwide are projected to watch, while Lagos residents can follow the action at designated viewing centres such as the Boat Club Opening Point of Contact, Wing Jetty, Mikano Building Viewing Centre, and LASWA headquarters.
As the world turns its attention to Lagos in October, the city is set to reinforce its identity as Nigeria’s commercial heartbeat and a model of sustainability and innovation on the global stage.
