Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is set to officially flag off the “Lagos to the World” global expedition on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the expedition, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., is the initiative of Nigerian entrepreneur and BMW enthusiast, U. Erik Nwagwu, who said the journey is dedicated to the memories of his late mother and sister, both of whom died from cancer.

According to a statement by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the expedition will see Nwagwu embark on a solo overland trip around the world in a Nigerian-plated 2008 BMW 535i, described as the first of its kind to depart Nigeria for a global circumnavigation.
The statement noted that the former president had endorsed the initiative and commended its mission, particularly its focus on cancer awareness and health advocacy.
The expedition will span six continents and will include a men’s health and prostate cancer awareness campaign aimed at providing free prostate cancer screenings in roadside communities often neglected by formal healthcare campaigns.
Speaking on the project, Nwagwu said the mission was inspired by the loss of his mother, Professor Helen Nwagwu, and his sister, Mrs. Onyema Fern Eseka, to cancer.
“This mission is dedicated to my late mother and sister, both lost to cancer,” he said.

Nwagwu, who is the Managing Director of Carbon Deficits Ltd and a founding member of BMW Club Nigeria, added that the expedition had already attracted support from several organisations.
Among the partners supporting the initiative are AXA Mansard Insurance as the official insurance partner, Zuri Health as the official digital healthcare partner, and Studio 24 as the official photography and multimedia partner.
Nwagwu said Obasanjo’s decision to personally flag off the expedition added historic significance to the project.
He also disclosed that the former president would conduct a guided tour of the presidential library for guests, including members of BMW Club Nigeria, patrons and invited dignitaries.
