Carl Dean, the devoted husband of country music legend Dolly Parton, passed away on Monday at the age of 82.
Dean, who remained famously private throughout his nearly 60-year marriage to Parton, died in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a statement she shared on social media.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy,” Parton wrote.

Their love story began outside a laundromat on the day Parton arrived in Nashville as an 18-year-old aspiring singer. Reflecting on their first meeting, she once shared, “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”
Two years later, on May 30, 1966, the couple wed in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia.
Despite his wife’s global fame, Dean intentionally stayed out of the spotlight, dedicating his career to running an asphalt-paving business in Nashville. Still, his presence was deeply felt in Parton’s music—most notably as the inspiration behind her classic hit Jolene.

Parton revealed in a 2008 interview that the song was based on a bank teller who had a crush on Dean. “She got this terrible crush on my husband,” she said. “And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us—when I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’ So it’s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.”
Dean’s reclusive nature even sparked rumours that he didn’t exist—something Parton found amusing. In a 1984 interview with the Associated Press, she joked, “A lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.”
Parton and Dean never had children, but their bond remained strong over the decades. He is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, according to Parton’s statement.
