Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved the payment of medical expenses for veteran Nollywood actor Sonny McDon, who is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development was disclosed by J. Martins, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Entertainment and Tourism, who confirmed that the actor has been battling the illness for several years.
In a post shared on his social media page, he noted that Governor Otti has stepped in to cover the cost of the actor’s treatment as part of the state’s support for creatives in distress.
“I am pleased to announce that H.E @alexottiofr has taken over the medical expenses bill for one of Abia’s legendary actor Mr Sunny Macdon who has been battling with prostate cancer for some years now. The office of the SSA on Entertainment & Tourism appreciate his kind gesture,” he wrote.
The intervention has drawn attention to the growing concerns over the welfare of ageing Nollywood practitioners, many of whom have faced health and financial challenges in recent years.
Several veteran actors in Nigeria’s film industry have previously appealed for public support to manage medical conditions and sustain livelihoods after decades of service to the entertainment sector.
Sonny McDon is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s seasoned actors, with a career spanning over three decades in the Nigerian film industry.
He has worked as an actor, producer, director and motion picture programmer, contributing significantly to the development and growth of Nollywood.
