Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Irene Imoh, Coordinator of the Women for Change Vanguard, stated that the demonstration aimed to demand proof from Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasizing that mere allegations were insufficient.

Imoh argued that if the senator could present concrete evidence, it would set a precedent for holding perpetrators accountable and encourage more women to speak up about sexual harassment.

“We gather here today at the esteemed UN House to express our support for His Excellency, the President of the 10th Senate, Senator Godswill Obong Akpabio.

“Over the past few weeks, he has faced significant reputational damage due to unsubstantiated allegations of sexual harassment made by his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“As we stand at a critical juncture in our fight against sexual misconduct, it is crucial to uphold accountability in such discussions. The allegations against Senator Akpabio must be subjected to thorough scrutiny.

“It is important to remember that in any case of misconduct, the burden of proof lies with the accuser. If Senator Natasha claims to have been a victim of sexual harassment, we urge her to present credible evidence. The gravity of such accusations demands accountability.

“We are particularly concerned about the misuse of the #BelieveAllWomen movement, which, if not handled carefully, could shield false accusations against men,” Imoh stated.
