EKO HOT BLOG gathered that in Nigeria, some popular breakfast choices might actually do more harm than good. Here are five foods you should avoid eating for breakfast.
1. Fried Foods (Akara, Puff-Puff)
While akara (bean cakes) and puff-puff are popular roadside staples, they are deep-fried in oil, often reused multiple times. This can lead to high cholesterol levels and sluggishness throughout the day. Consuming these heavy, greasy foods in the morning can also upset sensitive stomachs.
2. Sugary Drinks and Snacks
Many Nigerians enjoy sweetened beverages like tea loaded with sugar or sugary snacks such as gala and chin-chin. These options provide quick energy spikes followed by crashes, leaving you tired and hungry again within hours.
3. Instant Noodles
Though quick and easy to prepare, instant noodles are highly processed and lack essential nutrients. They are often loaded with sodium and artificial flavorings, which can cause bloating and leave you feeling lethargic.
4. Carbonated Drinks
Some Nigerians grab a bottle of soda as an energy boost in the morning, especially when in a rush.

This is a terrible idea as sodas are filled with sugar and caffeine, offering no nutritional value and potentially causing weight gain and dehydration.
5. Leftover Heavy Meals (Egusi, Eba, or Amala)
Eating last night’s heavy meal for breakfast is a common practice, but it can be too much for your body to handle early in the day. These meals are hard to digest and can cause fatigue instead of energizing you for the day ahead.
Opt for nutrient-packed options such as boiled yam with eggs, moi-moi (steamed bean pudding), or a bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruits. These meals are light, easy to digest, and provide long-lasting energy.
