- A coalition known as the “Coalition of Lovers of Freedom” is staging a mass protest today, Thursday, March 12, 2026, in Aba, Abia State.
- The demonstration aims to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently serving a life sentence.
- Former lawmaker Obinna Ichita has issued a strong appeal to participants to remain peaceful and avoid any actions that could lead to the destruction of property or clashes with security agencies.
Aba, the commercial nerve center of Abia State, is on high alert today as supporters of Nnamdi Kanu converge for a massive demonstration tagged the “One Million March.”
Eko Hot Blog reports that the protest, organized by the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, is designed to mount pressure on the Federal Government to grant freedom to the IPOB leader, following his controversial conviction and sentencing in 2025.

Organizers have spent the week distributing flyers and mobilizing supporters from across the South-East region to join the peaceful procession.
The march comes at a time of heightened tension, as Kanu’s supporters continue to argue that his release is essential for lasting peace in the region, despite the life sentence handed down by Justice James Omotosho on terrorism-related charges.
Amid the preparations, prominent leaders in the state have called for restraint. Obinna Ichita, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly and an indigene of Aba, urged the youth and participants to conduct themselves with “discipline and civility.”
He emphasized that while emotions regarding Kanu’s incarceration remain high, the strength of the movement lies in its ability to respect the rule of law and avoid being politicized.

Security agencies are expected to maintain a significant presence in Aba to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The trial that led to Kanu’s conviction established that he had used his platform to incite violence against security personnel and civilians, a charge his legal team and followers have persistently contested.
